As an early childhood specialist, in order to teach children music at such a young age, the pedagogical aspect must be taken into account, as well as using simple mechanics so that the child can relate and interpret the musical notes comprehensively through figures and colors, the support of parents and periodic practice in short periods of time is fundamental to learning.
There are very well known and simple methods to teach young children, here three:
1. Suzuki Method
Its founder, the Japanese Shinichi Suzuki, was convinced that if all children learn a language, they can also learn the musical language. His method picks up all the peculiarities of speech learning: start very soon, respecting the child's rhythm, repeat as often as necessary, always with the loving support and encouragement of the parents, etc.

When playing a piece, we have to interpret the piece and then make an active decision as to how we will adjust our tempo (speed) and style to reflect the style of particular period. With this being said, it can be a process that takes time to perfect and years of practice.
However, I have write the following 6 tips for you to speed up your piano skills.
1. Listen, Listen, Listen
Before you begin to create your own interpretation of a piece of music, you need to really listen close to what is being played. After listening many times, you will gauge the mood, tempo and style and therefore what the composer wants to achieve.
Tips: Make sure you choose the quality recording.
2. Begin to Shape
One of the most basic things you can do on this journey is to begin by varying the volume whilst staying within the phrasing.
Tips: Play around with loud, soft, crescendo and diminuendo.
3. Emphasise Phrasing
Your music should always be moving forwards with a direction otherwise the audience will soon get lost and confused.
Tip: Record yourself playing and then assess where you could be better.
4. Add Some Colour
Next, you can add certain moods by the use of tonal variations. By adding color, you can change the mood from bright to dark in an instant.
Tips: Change the way you approach to the piano.
5. Mold the Articulation
Also, you can mix in staccatos and slurs for effect before hitting the audience hard with a well-timed break of silence.
6. Use Your Body

Piano exam is one of the challenges that almost each student will pass through. There is no denying that the nerves can build up ahead of your ABRSM exam but as long as you prepare well enough, you shouldn't have any concerns.
For this reason, I have compiled a list of fantastic preparation strategies that will help my students to succeed.
1. Practice Performing
It is all well and good being able to perform your three pieces when you’re in a room by yourself, but can you do it in front of people? Although the nerves won’t be replicated exactly, performing for your friends and family can help to ease the pressure. If you can, try and build it up and make a real occasion of it so you get used to all the eyes being on you in the lead up as well as the performance itself.
In addition to this, recording yourself is also a good technique because you are only going to get one shot in the exam. If you listen back and notice errors, simply perfect that section until you have it down to the best of your ability.
2. Listen and Learn
One of the best ways to really feel and capture the essentials is to listen to your piece every time you sit down at the piano and then attempt to use this in your own performance. When you sit down, play your piece of music before attempting to make it sound the same. The more you listen, the more you will learn and you can use this to spot little changes you may not have noticed before.
3. Sight Reading
Furthermore, you also need to pay attention to the key signature and rhythm counting because sight-reading is worth 21/150 of your total marks. When it comes down to it, sight-reading is worth as much as the entire scale book. Try to practice all the exercises in the ABRSM Piano Specimen Sight Reading Test.

Although this used to be a tough section to perfect, ABRSM now sells the aural book along with a CD which means that you can do it by yourself! If you can play it perfectly at home but not in a lesson, you haven't yet learned it well enough. In truth, you should be able to play it perfectly every time and have the ability to start at any point. If you make a mistake in your performance, you need to skip ahead to the next section with ease.
7. Practice, Practice, Practice
Ultimately, we are all unique and learn in different ways. If you need to start slow to learn it perfectly before then speeding up, go ahead and do it like that. You should be controlling the music as opposed to the other way round and by starting slow, you are in control to then speed it up as and when you feel comfortable. Apparently, develop your own practice routine by setting achievable goal.
8. Mock Exam
Mock exam is an essential because the students are given the opportunity to experience mock version of an exam before the real exam day. I will prepare a mock sheet and highlighted their weaknesses and how should they work in the last few weeks.

As I mentioned earlier, there is nobody can learn the piano the same way and same pace. Children around the age of four or five who show particular curiosity in the keyboard should be left to learn and explore the basic ideas of the musical instrument on their own structured time table. Imposing an adult learning structure to them may well lead to them hating the instrument.
Therefore it is also a responsibility of their parents increase the curiosity in their child in music by dancing, singing or enrolling in a music program preschool so that the child may have fun learning and exploring about music.
Some of the key points to notice if a child is ready to play piano are:
At the start of my teaching career, I always find I can’t utilize timing wisely despite the fact that I have attempted my best to plan and arrange my weekly piano lesson.
For me, it sounds impossible to fit everything in one lesson. To stop myself from rushing is incorporating all sorts of skills though repertoire. Don’t isolate the same concept, this is called INTEGRATION.
I am not against separate elements should not be drilled but looking at how each concept relates to others to form overall character.
Here are some tips on how you can actually teaching the same concept rather than separately.
1. Scales and theory
Help student to relate the scales and the theory rather than teaching them separately. For instance, combine the scales playing with the key signature topic. You can include the concept such as semitones and tones. Don’t forget to include the solfege singing at this point.
2. Chords and cadences
Analyze the pieces to show the student the chords and cadences at the same time to introduce the type of cadences.
Never teach sight reading only when exam is closer. Teach them notes reading through interval whenever you introduce new piece.
This integrated approach will be a huge stepping stone for you to teach the piano effectively start from today.
